The Magicians er baseret på Lev Grossmans populære bogserie og følger Quentin Coldwater – en meget intelligent, men socialt tilbagetrukket fyr i 20’erne, der i al hemmelighed er besat af fantasy-romaner om det magiske land, Fillory. Quentin bliver optaget på et meget hemmelighedsfuldt, eksklusivt college for magi i den nordlige del af delstaten New York, hvor han gennemgår en grundig uddannelse i moderne trolddomskunst.
