Shawn MacArthur, a kisvárosi srác egy fillér nélkül érkezett New Yorkba. Abból tengeti életét, hogy hamisított cikkeket árul az utcán. Ám egy nap rámosolyog a szerencse, amikor a szélhámos Harvey Borden felfedezi, hogy a fiú tehetséges az utcai verekedésben. Amikor felajánlja Shawnnak, hogy segít neki komoly pénzt keresni, kettejük közt amolyan kényszerszövetség formálódik. Harvey tehát Shawn menedzsere lesz, és bevezeti őt a kesztyű nélküli verekedések korrupt világába, ahol a gazdagok a szerencsétlen pofozógépekre fogadnak. Shawn szinte egyik napról a másikra sztárbunyós lesz, profi bokszolókat ver meg, harcművész bajnokokkal és pankrátorokkal mérkőzik egy sor döbbenetesen intenzív küzdelemben. Ám ha valaha is szeretne elmenekülni ebből a sötét világból, amelybe belecsöppent, akkor most szembe kell néznie élete legkönyörtelenebb harcával.
