瓦莱利（奥黛丽·塔图 Audrey Tautou 饰）是一个古灵精怪满脑子奇思妙想的法国姑娘，做梦都想成为一名演员的她只身一人来到了纽约，希望能够在此实现明星梦。然而现实是苍白而残酷的，无门无路的瓦莱利只能依靠一支捡到的破扫帚，给别人打扫卫生来赚取生活费。夜间，无处可去的她会蜷缩在一个小花园里。虽然日子过得不堪入目，但瓦莱利却始终心存希望，也从来没有放弃过梦想。瓦莱利借宿的花园属于剧作家杰克（贾斯汀·塞洛克斯 Justin Theroux 饰），曾经，杰克因为他的剧本而在业内走红，可如今，才思枯竭的他走入了职业的瓶颈。瓦莱利的出现让杰克感到备受打扰，但随着时间的推移，在瓦莱利的身上，杰克看到了灵感的火花。
